Workshops and Healing Retreats

Spring/Summer 2023

Just Be
A Workshop/Mini-Retreat for Therapists
Saturday, May 20, 2023
10:30am - 1:30pm
3CEUS
Heaven On Earth Farm
This is an invitation to simply sit and be what you are - pure presence, pure awareness, peace, and wellbeing.

We could call this a self-care workshop, but that implies that there are two: a self that needs to be cared for and the one who is doing the caring.

Picture
But, nonduality says that there is only one: one energy, one light if you will, and everything is an expression of It - including you.

When your sense of a contracted self falls away, even a little bit, you feel or sense this truth - uncontracted, you feel ease, uncontracted, you feel peace, uncontracted, there is nothing to achieve, nothing to fix.

Please join me for this unique and unstructured experience, as we let the energy of the moment guide our meditation and any teaching/sharing that arises.

Topics that arise might likely include:
  • the real reason we don't want to let go
  • how to help the bodymind know that it's OK to do so
  • what common, limited, core programs are running most thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
  • how to be free of the limited, contracted, sense of self

Please note that this is an outdoor event. In case of rain, we will meet in a small building on the property. In case of severe weather or poor site conditions, this event will be canceled.

There is a port o'john on the premises.

Pre-registration is required by Thursday, May 18th. Register by emailing Shelly and indicating which workshop you are registering for and pay by credit card here. (Select option "Workshop I"). You may also mail a check to: Shelly Smith, PO Box 1233, Pickens, SC 29671.

There will be no refunds given after Thursday, May 18th, unless the workshop is cancelled due to weather or insufficient number of registrants.

Cost is $90.00 and includes your certificate.

EMBODIMENT AS ULTIMATE SELF-CARE
A Workshop/Mini-Retreat for Therapists
Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021

Rain Date: Saturday, Nov. 6, 2021
9:30am-4:30pm
Heaven On Earth Farm
Pickens, SC
6 CEUS (for LPC, LMFT, and general social work)
Picture
"Self-care" implies doing something for yourself to care for yourself. But who is the self that is doing the caring and who is the self receiving the care?

This implication that there are two separate entities is a reflection of our mechanistic, Cartesian-influenced view that our bodies are merely vehicles that help us move through life and therefore, like our cars, require routine maintenance and repair.

But when we are fully embodied, self-care becomes self-evident. Being embodied means that our minds, bodies, and emotions work together, communicating with each other, as one organism. Being embodied means that decisions and impulses are driven by the whole and are therefore supported by and in service to the whole, bringing the whole into balance.

In this nature-as-role-model, nature-supported, potentially life-changing workshop, you will learn:
  • what embodiment is and why it's so important
  • how we came to be disembodied to begin with, as individuals and as a species
  • how we reconnect with our bodies, and therefore ourselves, in safe, practical, and creative ways
  • how embodiment addresses our "self-care" and our effectiveness with our clients - including topics like "Zoom Fatigue" and other kinds of burnout
  • why embodiment is necessary for effective emotional regulation and how to become an emotional "converter" versus simply a suppressor or expressor
  • practical tools that you can incorporate into your daily life and start sharing with your clients immediately

Also, you will be introduced to dance/movement as a powerful embodiment practice that provides access to valuable core resources that live in every BODY.

Learn more about EMBODIMENT here.

This is an outdoor event, but social distancing WILL BE STRICTLY OBSERVED. Please bring your masks for use when closer contact might be unavoidable.

Lunch is on your own. You are encouraged to bring a picnic.

Like all outdoor events at Heaven On Earth Farm, this one is subject to last-minute cancellation or rescheduling in the event of extreme weather or poor site conditions. In light of COVID-19, we will have to cancel if there's a likelihood of rain.

Rain date is Saturday, Nov. 6, 2021.

There is a port o' john on the premises.

Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, Oct. 20th.

There will be NO REFUNDS given after 6:00pm, Oct. 20th unless workshop is cancelled or rescheduled due to weather.

Cost is $120.00 and includes your certificate.
A Note From Shelly
I'm so excited to announce this new workshop!

Embodiment has been the focus of my personal and professional work, long before there was a name for it and long before anyone knew who Bessel van der Kolk and Peter Levine were.

After this past summer's rigorous exploration and trainings with the Tamalpa Institute, Hakomi Somatic Mindfulness, and Open Floor International, I'm feeling bolder and more validated than ever.

Please join me for deep discussion and embodied exploration as we engage in this powerful and pivotal time in the evolution of our profession and of our species.

Winter 2021

SPECIAL HORSE SESSIONS FOR THERAPISTS

The start of a new year is the perfect time to release old patterns, recharge, and set our intentions for expressing ourselves and our work in the world with more authenticity, more power, and more freedom.

This unique opportunity, offered for a limited time, is less like therapy, and more like a mini-retreat, self-realization, moving-beyond-preconceived-notions-and-limitations personal growth experience.

You will step out of the known, but limited, world of intellectual understanding, and surrender to a deeper knowing - one that arises when you reconnect with your instinctual, more primal, nature-connected self, and experience a greater truth that wants to move through and express itself as you.

You might receive clarity, inspiration, deeper alignment with your values, desires, and soul's intention, and more peace. Or you might simply feel a release of accumulated tension as a result of too much technology, too much worldly craziness, and not enough of nature's wisdom and healing truth.

What will happen?

You will talk about your intention briefly - what you'd like more clarity or guidance about, or how you'd like to feel freer or more peaceful. Shelly will help you get more grounded and reconnected to your body. The two of you will enter the corral with the horses. She will help you access and track the "energy" as it arises in your body. She will observe the horses' reactions, continue to help you track the energy in your body as it moves and shifts, and allow the energetic "dance" between you and the horses to unfold.

What makes it so powerful?

When you reconnect with your body and attune to its energy, it will reveal where you're holding back, where you might be stuck, or simply where you're feeling less than free. Learning how to "listen" to this energy allows it to move and as it does it registers, as energy, in the bodyminds of the horses, nature's greatest empaths, and they respond - offering real-time, unfiltered feedback, which in turn informs your bodymind in an energetic loop. This creates a deeper learning, below the level of the thinking brain, at the level of the bodymind, or subconscious mind.

What do clients say?

Clients often report that words cannot adequately describe their experience and yet they know, without a doubt, that something important has happened, a shift of some kind, that is palpable.

Now I know what it means to be happy. I thought I knew where it was and how to get to it, but it's really different from what I thought.

I thought I knew what the problem was and what I needed to overcome to fix it, but I was wrong. The answer came so clearly and as I stood next to Sonny and cried, it was like my insides reorganized and I saw the truth and felt such peace.

These individual sessions are being offered, for a limited time, on Fridays and Saturdays, so that therapists with busy practices can attend. Two time slots are available,10:30-12:00 and 2:00-3:30, on the fourth Fridays of the month and second Saturdays, beginning Friday, Jan. 29th and ending Friday, March 26th. Please allow an hour and a half for each session. The fee is $160.00.

Please feel free to contact Shelly to schedule a brief free phone consultation to determine if this experience might be right for you.

Please make sure to receive notice of upcoming offers, workshops, and continuing education opportunities by requesting to be added to the mailing list here.

Also, please like and FOLLOW Nature's Way Home's Facebook page to receive notice of special offers.

Therapist Reports Physical Healing After Exercise At Workshop:

. . . What really amazed me the most, however, was the first-hand healing that occurred for me through my participation with a Body Centered Exercise with you, and with being in the ring with your beautiful horses. I was able to release sadness that I really didn’t even know I held. I know exactly where I held it too. For YEARS I have had left low back and hip pain. Last night, when I got back from the workshop and was getting ready for bed, I went to take my usual Tylenol to ease up my pain so I can sleep, when I suddenly realized that I no longer had the pain! The pain is still gone this morning and I wanted to let you know and to say thank you. - DB.

Perhaps you've heard of shinrin-yoku, the Japanese practice of forest bathing. Research has shown that it boosts immune system functioning, with an increase in the count of the body's Natural Killer (NK) cells, reduces blood pressure, accelerates recovery from surgery or illness, increases energy levels, and improves sleep. And these are just a few of the benefits. You can actually take courses to become a certified forest bathing facilitator and some therapists and physicians are doing so!

Here at Heaven On Earth Farm, we practice something similar but call it pasture bathing. The horses and I don't need a certificate or research to know that lying out in a sunny pasture in 50-70 degree weather is good for the body and good for the soul. It's too cool for the bugs to be a nuisance, and just warm enough - with the right clothes and a sunny, pastured hill.

This time of year, it's the horses' and my favorite pastime and believe it or not, I've staved off many a cold and early signs of "sickie," by lying in the pasture, drinking lots of water, and letting my body be healed by the sun and the earth. And, if you are one of the many suffering from nature-deficit disorder, seasonal affective disorder, or just plain grumpy disorder, pasture bathing might be just the ticket.

So please consider joining me for a brief grounding, breathing, and releasing session, followed by time on your own, in silence, to reconnect with your body, reconnect with the earth, become more present, and let Nature do her thing to heal and restore your tired, fast-paced, techno-weary soul.

Cost is $45.00 and PREREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED by Thursday, Oct. 22nd by doing the following: 1) Email me to tell me that you're coming and 2) Secure your spot with a credit card here. Click on the payment box and scroll down to "Pasture Bathing."

Cancellation is required by Friday, Oct. 23rd, before 5:00pm, to avoid being charged the full fee.

If you are a LPC and/or LMFT and would like additional CEUS, then plan to stay a little later for a discussion about Ecotherapy, the healing power of nature, and bringing the breath and body-informed approaches into your practice. CEUS will be adjusted accordingly. Bring an extra $10.00 to cover the cost of certificate. And, please contact me to let me know that you're wanting CEUS. Thank you!

Hope to see you soon,

Shelly

P.S. This event is subject to last-minute cancellation or rescheduling in the event of inclement weather.

2 Mini Healing Retreats For Therapists
Saturday, Oct. 24th
Friday, Oct. 30th

(Feel free to attend one or both!)
both from 10am-1pm
Heaven On Earth Farm
Pickens, SC
3 CEUS each
Cost: $65.00 (plus $10.00 certificate fee)

If you are feeling stressed or burned out, you're not alone. We are living in challenging and emotionally charged times. The collective fear and anger is palpable. Those of us on the front lines, those of us in the healing professions, are particularly vulnerable to its negative influences. It is vitally important that we find ways to release the build-up of negative energy that may be accumulating in our bodyminds.

That is why I'm offering 2 mini-retreats from the collective madness, at Heaven On Earth Farm, on two separate dates Saturday, October 24th and Friday, October 30th, both from 10am-1pm, especially for counsellors and therapists. (Feel free to attend either or both!)

Want to get face-to-face CEUS while you lie in the grass, look at the sky, and listen to the birds, and maybe some poetry? I'll also help you quiet your mind, connect with your breath and your body, and relax the tension that you're holding in your bodymind. This kind of inner-body release is better, I think, and longer lasting than a massage, and you can get it for about the same price - with 3 CEUS to boot!

If you want to hang out a little longer afterwards, I'll be available to answer questions about the healing power of nature (also known as ecotherapy or nature-based counseling) AND about the importance of bringing the breath and body awareness into your work with clients, as well as your own personal work - your mindfulness practice and/or prayer life. (If you elect to stay a little later, I will adjust your CEUS accordingly).

Since we'll be outside, we will not wear masks, but social distancing will be strictly adhered to. There's a port-o-john on the premises and bottled water will be provided.

Please dress very casually and comfortably. Bring your own folding chair, blanket, or yoga mat. (I highly recommend lying on the ground versus sitting in a chair for optimum healing benefit).

PREREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED by Thursday. Oct. 22nd and/or Wednesday, Oct. 28th respectively, by doing the following: 1) Email me to let me know that you're coming and 2) Send a check to: Shelly Smith, PO Box 1233, Pickens, SC 29671. (Postmarked on or before Oct. 22nd and/or Oct. 28th), OR pay with a credit card here and select Mini Retreat.

Cancellation is required by 5:00pm, the day before each workshop, to avoid being charged the full fee.

Thank you,

Shelly

Day Of The Dead
Meditation and Discussion

Saturday, October 31st, 2020
5:00pm-7:00pm
Heaven On Earth Farm
Cost: FREE
(Love offerings are happily accepted:)
Join us, as we celebrate the Day Of the Dead, also known as Halloween, the blue moon, and the last day of daylight saving time.
Note: This experience is limited to past or current coaching clients, previous workshop attendees, and colleagues.

The Dalai Lama says that he meditates on death every day and has been for years.

If this sounds morbid or gruesome to you, perhaps you're still thinking you might get out of this world alive. Perhaps you've managed to think of death purely philosophically, as something that you know intellectually, will happen one day.

But if and when you can let yourself "die before you die," you'll experience a sense of freedom that only mystics, spiritual masters, those who are close to death, those who've received terminal diagnoses, or who've had near-death experiences, can attest to. It's the freedom beyond holding on - holding onto anything - but ultimately, to life.

To the degree that we fear death, either consciously or not, is the degree that we hold back, hide, brace against life's challenges, grasp for control, seek approval and our sense of security and safety from outside sources, and don't really live. To die before we die means that we look death in the eye and allow whatever feelings it stirs up, to arise, be felt, and be released.

This is a wonderful practice. Every time you release any emotional charge, no matter how small, around the topic of death, you are that much freer inside.

In light of Covid-19, you're asked to bring your own folding chairs or mats to sit on, refreshments (non-alcoholic), and whatever else you need to be comfortable. Since we will be outside I will not require masks. But we will strictly adhere to 6' social distancing guidelines. Those who do not comply will be put in time-out with the horses:).

Please respect the spiritual beliefs or lack thereof of others. This is not an opportunity to promote our own beliefs.

Special note: If you have had suicidal thoughts in the past six months, this may not be the right experience for you. Please contact Shelly, before registering, if you're not sure.

This experience is free of charge,* but preregistration is required by Thursday Oct. 29 at 8:00pm, by emailing Shelly at [email protected]. If this is your first time visiting the property, please request directions in your email.

* Love offerings are greatly appreciated.

Spring and Summer 2019

"It's too hot to sit outside. Is she crazy?" you might say. And I say, "Sitting next to the creek in the shade is not the same as walking through a shadeless, asphalt parking lot in Greenville. I've been seeing clients outside all summer and have hosted 3 workshops. We've all done fine." Shelly

Working With Emotional Energy: What Horse Whisperers Know

Emotions are made up of energy - so are thoughts and beliefs. Energy is stored in the bodymind and must be accessed and released via the bodymind.

Great horse "whisperers" know that working with a horse's flight instinct, is more effective than trying to control or subdue it.

Drawing from their example, we will learn how to release negative energy - negative emotions - from the bodymind, by learning how to partner with them versus trying to manage them.

This workshop is experiential. You will learn how to use and practice these tools for yourself, before attempting to use them with clients. These tools will also help you stay balanced and centered and take on less "stuff" from your clients.

Please note: We will not necessarily be working with horses. This workshop is designed to help you learn how to work with negative emotions in any context. Also please note that this is an outdoor event and is subject to last-minute rescheduling in case of severe weather. Lunch is on your own.

Don't let the casual nature of the setting or your facilitator fool you. This work is evidence-based and is consistent with and draws from everything that's effective about EMDR, Focusing, and Somatic Experiencing.

Shelly Smith, LPC, LMFT, has dedicated over 25 years of her personal and professional life in acquiring a firsthand experiential knowledge of how trauma is stored in the body and how it, and it's emotional content, can be released and integrated a in safe, gentle, and practical way.

No Need To Dig Into the Past

This workshop will explain and demonstrate why, when it comes to unresolved trauma, there is no need to dig into the past, retell it, or rehash it, and why it isn't necessary to have clear memories in order to heal. The past will reveal itself quite naturally, when we anchor ourselves in our bodies in the present moment, and allow our bodies to reveal "what's here now." Done correctly, this body inquiry into "what's here now," will reveal what emotional energy is ready to be released. This emotional energy is experienced as a felt experience - a sometimes vague combination of body sensations, emotions, and images or thoughts. These will arise and unfold in a natural order when one learns to "track" the felt sense.

The Client's Own Body-Wisdom Guides the Process

As we guide our clients in feeling safe and grounded while tracking the felt sense, any traumatic memories associated with this energy, in the form of pictures, voices, feelings, or body sensations, will arise organically, spontaneously, and naturally to become integrated in a gentle full-bodied sort of way. Working this way minimizes, if not completely eliminates, the risk of re-traumatization, overstimulation, and overwhelm, because the client's own body-wisdom is guiding the process.

You Will Learn . . .

some basic skills that lay the foundation for somatic/body-centered work. You can start using them with your clients immediately and easily incorporate them into EMDR and other approaches.

Help your clients . . .
  • Decrease anxiety, hypervigilance, hyperarousal, and irritability
  • Feel more empowered as they learn how to work with feelings, not just manage them
  • Learn how to anchor themselves in their bodies and in the present moment
  • Learn how to stay present and grounded when feelings of overwhelm arise

This process has successfully treated clients with anxiety, depression, and PTSD. It has also helped clients with relationship problems, food addictions, adrenal fatigue, and a variety of stress-related health problems.

- DB.

Healing the Feminine Soul: A Fully Embodied Meditation Retreat
Saturday, June 23, 2018
10:00am-4:00pm
Heaven On Earth Farm, Pickens, SC
Cost: $75.00
(5 CEUS for LPC's and LMFT's)

(A healthy lunch will be provided).
While the masculine longs for the freedom of "no-mind" - the kind that's found post-ejaculation or in his man-cave, the feminine longs for love.

If you find that meditation is often challenging, frustrating, or less than compelling, it may be that your feminine nature is hungry for a full-bodied spiritual experience. A quiet mind is great, but a quiet mind disconnected from the body might leave you wanting more. As a woman you are made to allow love into your body, to nurture that love, and to give it out through your body. It's a circular, felt-expeience.

When this longing goes unrecognized or unfulfilled, it can sometimes show up in our relationship with food, as depression, or as physical symptoms.

When you can reconnect with your body and open yourself to the present moment, you allow the peace and well-being that's always present to flow through you - in a way that's fulfilling and satisfying.

With a combination of guided exercises and time on your own in nature, this retreat/workshop experience will assist you in doing just that.

"I feel it in my heart."
"I know it in my bones."
"I had a gut-feeling."
We have these expressions in our language because we instinctively know that intuitive impressions and Divine Guidance, come to us through the bodymind - not so much from the thinking brain. After all, when was the last time you heard someone say, "I felt it in my frontal cortex."?

The body doesn't lie. Beneath the chatter of the thinking brain and our ego-identification with it, lie the suppressed emotions and limiting beliefs stored in the bodymind. Deeper still, lies the wisdom, peace, and wellbeing that is the truth of who you are.

Please consider attending this valuable opportunity to learn how to access your gut (literally) and its guidance, clarity, and peace.
